What Error 279 tells you
Error Code 279, sometimes shown with ID 17 or a failed-to-connect message, means the Roblox app and Roblox servers did not complete a network connection. It does not identify one universal cause.
The useful question is which layer failed: Roblox's service, one experience, the local app, the device, or the current network. Test in that order so each result narrows the problem instead of changing several things at once.
Use the five-minute diagnosis first
Before reinstalling anything, collect four simple signals. These tests preserve settings and usually reveal whether the failure is broad or local.
- Check Roblox's official status page for an active incident.
- Close Roblox completely, reopen it, and try again.
- Open a different Roblox experience to test whether only one experience is affected.
- Restart the device and reconnect to the network.
- Try a different trusted network, such as a phone hotspot, if one is available.
Read the result of each test
If Roblox reports a service incident, wait and retry after the official status changes. Reinstalling during a platform incident will not repair the remote service.
If only one experience fails, its server or content may be the problem. If every experience fails on one device but works on another device using the same Wi-Fi, focus on the first device. If the same device works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi, focus on the router, filtering, or internet provider.
Fix the app and device layer
Roblox's official Error 279 instructions vary by operating system, but the common low-risk actions are to fully close the app, restart the device, confirm the system date and time, and install a current Roblox version.
On macOS, also check Privacy & Security settings if Roblox does not have the permission it needs to run. On mobile and ChromeOS, force-closing the app before reopening can clear a stuck runtime state.
- Install operating-system updates that are already supported by the device.
- Use the official Roblox app source for reinstalls.
- Do not download unofficial repair utilities or modified Roblox clients.
- Preserve the account password and two-step verification recovery methods before removing an app.
Test the network without weakening security
Restart the router, then test Roblox again. If possible, compare Ethernet, Wi-Fi, and a trusted hotspot. A clean comparison is more useful than randomly changing DNS, ports, antivirus, and browser settings at the same time.
Firewalls and filtering can block Roblox traffic, especially on school, workplace, managed, or family-filtered networks. Ask the network administrator to review the official Roblox requirements. Do not permanently disable the firewall or antivirus simply to make one game connect.
When reinstalling makes sense
Reinstall after the service is available, the problem affects multiple experiences, a device restart did not help, and another network did not isolate the cause. A fresh official install can replace damaged app files and update the client.
Uninstall only the Roblox application and its documented local data. Avoid generic cleanup tools that request administrator access or promise lower ping. After reinstalling, test Roblox before restoring unrelated network customizations.
Prepare a useful support report
Contact Roblox Support when the error persists across experiences and trusted networks after the official troubleshooting steps. A compact test record prevents repeating the same advice.
Include the exact error text, device model, operating system version, Roblox app version if visible, approximate time and timezone, affected experiences, and which networks were tested. Mention recent device or network changes, but never send a password, cookie, two-step verification code, or backup code.
